Organization/Member Spotlight

Tell us about your organization.

Deaf Empowerment Awareness Foundation, Inc. (DEAF, Inc.) was founded in 2008 by Deaf individuals with a passion for improving communication access for people with hearing loss, particularly in medical settings. Our nonprofit organization is dedicated to empowering and raising awareness for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind communities in the greater St. Louis area. We strive to bridge communication gaps and promote equal access to communication through advocacy, education, and direct services. Our offerings range from ASL interpreting, ASL classes and assistive technology to educational workshops and direct and peer support programs, all designed to ensure that every individual, regardless of their hearing ability, has access to the resources they need.

Will you share a success story or impactful moment that illustrates the difference DEAF Inc. makes in the St. Louis region?

One of our most inspiring stories comes from two older adult students who completed our ASL 1, 2, and 3 classes. Both are good friends and Hard of Hearing. Before enrolling, they were uncomfortable with their hearing loss and chose not to disclose it to friends or coworkers. However, after noticing further hearing loss, they realized they needed a plan and signed up for our classes. They fully embraced the experience, learning ASL and immersing themselves in the Deaf community by attending events and volunteering at DEAF, Inc. Through this journey, they built the courage to share their hearing loss and communication needs with friends, family, and coworkers. Their story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to discover more about yourself, embrace your identity, and learn sign language.

How can individuals and the community get involved or support Dogs for Our Brave?

There are many ways individuals and the community can get involved with DEAF, Inc. Volunteering is always appreciated, whether it's helping at our events, assisting with administrative tasks, or participating in outreach activities. Donations are also a crucial part of keeping our programs running. Additionally, businesses and community members can support us by hiring qualified ASL interpreters through our services or by partnering with us for advocacy and accessibility training. We also encourage people to attend our workshops or events to learn more about Deaf culture and how to create more inclusive environments.

Why are you excited to be a part of Nonprofit Marketers’ Network?

I’m excited to be part of Nonprofit Marketers Network because it offers a great platform for collaboration and learning. Marketing plays a crucial role in how nonprofits reach and serve their communities, and being part of this network allows DEAF, Inc. to not only share our mission but also learn new strategies and best practices from others in the field. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with other passionate nonprofit professionals, exchange ideas, and grow as an organization.
