Organization/Member Spotlight

This month we're featuring Valeda Keys and Valeda's Hope, the organization she founded. Keys is a breast cancer survivor, author, and founder and executive director of Valeda's Hope, a St. Louis-based breast cancer support organization providing resources to women in the community along their cancer journey.

Please tell us about your organization.

Valeda's Hope is a not-for-profit organization that focuses on women's health. Through Recliners for Her & Comfort Items for Her, Mammograms for Her, and Pencils and Pearls, Valeda's Hope helps women in the St. Louis region.

Can you tell us more about your programs?

The Recliners for Her & Comfort Items for Her programs help patients heal after mastectomy surgery. Patients are discharged from the hospital within twenty-four hours after this major surgery, and the drains that remain attached to patients during recovery make it challenging for them to be comfortable in bed. The recliner helps them rest comfortably. In addition to the recliner, Valeda's Hope gives comfort items to these women, including PJs, slippers, a blanket, a pillow, back scratchers, facial wipes, and more.

Valeda's Hope isn't just about recovery after breast cancer surgery, the group advocates for breast cancer prevention. Partnering with Siteman Cancer Center, the group's Mammograms for Her program brings mobile mammograms to local libraries for underserved communities. Pearls and Pencils is a program that educates middle and high school girls about breast health.

Mammogram, Money, and Mondays is a recent initiative that teaches women and cancer survivors about financial literacy. The United Way, the Financial Coalition Empowerment and Stifel Bank and Trust help with this program that has thus far educated seventy women.

Can you share examples illustrating how Valeda’s Hope makes a difference in the St. Louis region?

The Pencils and Pearls program educated 2,500 middle and high school girls in the Hazelwood School District. As the name implies, the program also gave those who attended the program pencils and pearls.

Women recovering from surgery often share their gratitude for the support Valeda's Hope provides.  One recent breast cancer survivor said, "I am grateful for you today! It is people like you who are an inspiration and keep us all going. Thank you for pouring your heart into helping other women and making the world a better place. When yucky stuff happens we have choices: we can be eaten up by the pain and the bad, we can move on, or the most powerful choice of all is to move for change and to channel that pain into purpose for others. You are an inspiration."

How can individuals and the community get involved or support Valeda’s Hope?

Individuals can support Valeda's Hope by donating, volunteering, or becoming a sponsor. Visit the website to learn more about how you can contribute to the health of women in the St. Louis region through Valeda's Hope.
