Organization/Member Spotlight
Tell us about your organization.
SODA: Student Organ Donation Advocates is a national nonprofit that empowers students to advocate for organ, eye, and tissue donation. Since our founding at Washington University in St. Louis in 2014, SODA has grown to 115+ chapters nationwide, helping students educate more than 200,000 people about donation and register more than 11,000 donors.
Will you share a success story or impactful moment that illustrates the difference your organization makes in the St. Louis region?
Amazing things often start here in St. Louis and create ripples of change far beyond our region. SODA was founded in St. Louis by Sara (Miller) Royf in memory of her sister, Laura. The Millers' selfless decision to allow Laura to be an organ donor saved the life of Trish, a now-retired special education teacher from New York. What started as one chapter in St. Louis has grown into a nationwide movement with more than 100 chapters honoring their own “Lauras” and “Trishes” nationwide. Now, we support students like Maddie, a transplant recipient who attends George Mason University in Virginia. “My new motto is: ‘I’m not living for one. I’m living for two now’…Everything I do, my donor does with me,” Maddie often says. With this in mind, she started a SODA chapter in 2022. Maddie and her chapter have educated 1,122 people about organ donation and registered 104 new donors since then with mentorship, supplies, event funding, how-to guides, and leadership training from SODA.
How can individuals and the community get involved or support your organization?
One of the best ways to support SODA is by referring high school, college, and graduate students to join or start a chapter at their schools. Students are at the heart of our mission, and we’re always looking to empower more young leaders to advocate for organ, eye, and tissue donation.
Why are you excited to be a part of Nonprofit Marketers Network?
The magic behind SODA is peer-to-peer education—it’s how our students inspire and empower one another to take action. Nonprofit Marketers Network exemplifies that same concept by creating a space where professionals can learn from and support each other. This network enables me to exchange ideas and gain insights that help strengthen our student-led advocacy efforts and save lives nationwide.
I joined Nonprofit Marketers Network at the very beginning of my career as part of the mentorship program, and it played a critical role in shaping my growth as a professional. Now, as I lead an organization, I often reflect on the guidance and support I received through this network. For anyone considering joining, I wholeheartedly encourage you to get involved! It’s an incredible opportunity to learn, build meaningful connections, and make a lasting impact in the nonprofit space.
