Organization/Member Spotlight

This month we're featuring an interview with Mary Meyer. Mary serves on the Board of Directors for Angels' Arms. She's passionate about the organization and its mission.
Please tell us about your organization!
Angels’ Arms was founded in 2000 to provide and support loving homes for foster children. Our Mission is to engage local communities, provide homes, resources and experiences, and to keep siblings together in foster care. Our Vision is a community-supported foster care system in which parents and children thrive.
Foster parents have the toughest calling in life. Angels’ Arms provides as much support as possible, with the help of the community, to ensure they have what they need to care for the children who enter their homes. Angels’ Arms does this by providing foster parents with everything from meals, household essentials, milestone celebrations, family experiences, and more. With community support, we help to bridge the gap in the foster care system.
Currently, we have 15 homes in St. Louis and the surrounding counties, and have served over 700 children, including over 250 sibling groups.
Will you share an example of how Angels’ Arms and its mission made a difference?
Javon's journey with Angels' Arms began at age 13 when he joined foster parents Phyllis and Eldon Hackman. Initially troubled, Javon faced strict rules but eventually understood they were for his benefit. His perseverance led him to graduate high school with a 3.4 GPA and attend Southeast Missouri State University. There, he thrived academically, joined a fraternity, worked part-time, and maintained strong ties with his foster family.
Javon's support network, including his foster parents and the broader Angels' Arms community, played a crucial role in his success. They helped with tuition, sent care packages, and facilitated networking opportunities, including an internship at a Fortune 500 company. After graduating college, Javon returned home, started his career with World Wide Technology, and dedicated himself to mentoring other foster youth.
Today, Javon is the Supplier Diversity Program Manager at WWT, married, and living in Texas, while maintaining close ties with his foster family and Angels' Arms. His story exemplifies overcoming adversity, with only 50% of foster children graduating high school and less than 3% graduating college nationally. Javon's achievements highlight the transformative impact of a supportive community and determined spirit.
How can individuals and the community get involved or support Angels’ Arms?
There are many ways to get involved in assisting Angels’ Arms foster families.
Birthday Buddy Program: Provide a birthday celebration for one of the foster youth
- Host an Essential Drive: Collect needed items that directly impact our families – food, paper products, personal care products, etc.
- Meal Drop Offs for Families: Give a foster family a night off from cooking by providing them a meal
- Help Out with Fundraising: Volunteer to help plan or work at one of our fundraisers
- Back to School Program: Sponsor a child or a family by donating needed school supplies
- Adopt a child or family for Christmas
- Work with Foster Youth: Tutoring, mentoring, assisting with writing resumes or developing interview skills
- Home Maintenance Service Projects: Landscaping, spring cleaning, yard work, gardening, power washing, etc.
If you are ages 21-35, consider joining the Angels’ Arms Junior Board. The Junior Board provides extensive support to our families and holds three exciting fundraisers: Trivia Night, Sip & Savor and Bar Bounce.
Why are you excited to be a part of Nonprofit Marketers Network?
Although Angels’ Arms was founded 24 years ago, we are still working to share our mission with the Greater St. Louis Community. Nonprofit Marketers Network helps us to reach more people who care, who want to make a difference to those living in our community who need our help, and who want to make a difference in the lives of foster youth.
